The Process of Identifying Opportunities for Innovation

The key to successful innovation is developing processes that uncover a company’s key competencies and then using those competencies to form innovative solutions through workforce development. Gottfried Dutine, Chief Innovation Officer at Royal Philips, shares how Philips used this process to enhance medical image processing used by pathologists to diagnose medical conditions.

Gottfried H. Dutine is a senior executive advisor. He was Board Member and Chief Innovation Officer of Philips until January 2012, when he retired. He joined Philips in 2002 and served as Member Board of Management in several roles: Head of Global Markets and Innovation, CEO Consumer Electronics, New Business Development (New Ventures, Emerging Markets, e-Health), Strategic and Key Account Management, Government Relations. Between 1997 and 2002, Dr. Dutine was at Alcatel Vice Chairman Telecom Board Committee, CEO of their German subsidiaries Alcatel SEL AG and Alcatel Deutschland GmbH, and served as Area President the Middle and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia countries. From 1989 to 1997, he was Director of Robert Bosch GmbH and held at Bosch several senior positions such as President of their Mobile Communications Division and President Blaupunkt GmbH. He began his career in 1979 as Manager Technical Operations at Rockwell-Collins GmbH, a German Subsidiary of Rockwell International. Throughout his career Dr. Dutine has served in a number of industrial and governmental activities. A. o. he was Board Member ZVEI (association of the German Electrical and Electronic Industry), Co-Chairman European-Russian Industrial Round Table, member of EACEM (European Association of Consumer Electronics Manufacturers), Transatlantic Business Dialogue, and Singapore Infocomm International Advisory Panel. He has also been Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Member in several supervisory boards. He also overviewed a number of joint-ventures, mostly with Asian companies. His scope of Business Experiences comprises Consumer, Automotive, Telecommunications, Healthcare, and Lighting. Key elements of Dr. Dutine’s Professional Expertise include: Business Management, Innovation Management, Start-ups and New Ventures, Strategy and New Business Development, M&A, Risk Management and Emerging Markets. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany.
