Pokémon Go and the Future of Augmented Reality

Since its release in July 2016, Pokémon Go has become something of a global phenomenon. As one of the top grossing mobile apps of 2016, the game still boasts millions of daily active users. Powered by geolocation and augmented reality (AR) technologies, Pokémon Go allows players to interact with their physical surroundings from their mobile devices. The game holds promise for the future of mobile gaming and the use of AR for other applications. Steve Peters, former experience designer at Niantic Labs, which developed Pokémon Go, sits down with GLG in Hong Kong to give his take on why the game became a worldwide hit as well as what we can expect from AR going forward.

Currently the co-founder and CCO of No Mimes Media, Steve Peters is an Emmy Award-winning experience designer. He has over 20 years of experience producing cross-media narrative storytelling in alternate reality, AR, and for interactive web series. Before his time at Nantic Labs, Peters served as VP of Experience Design at Fourth Wall Studios. In 2002, he founded the Alternate Reality Gaming Network. Peters is also a frequent guest lecturer at USC, Georgia Tech, and Cal Arts.
