The Affordable Care Act: Before and After

Whether or not healthcare should be subsidized by the U.S. government remains a heated debate. Since the Affordable Care Act has been law, more Americans have access to coverage than they did in any time prior. The quality of care has also improved, according to healthcare industry expert Kevin R. Hayden. But will this progress last? While Hayden believes the policies themselves are sustainable, questions still exist for the industry at large—especially surrounding state funding for Medicaid. Hayden sits down with GLG to discuss the Affordable Care Act, healthcare reform, Medicaid expansion, and more.

Healthcare executive Kevin Hayden currently heads Aetna’s Medicaid division for the Great Lakes Region. Prior to that, he served as CEO of Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW). From 2008 to 2012, Hayden was President of State Sponsored Business (SSB) at Wellpoint, Inc, where he oversaw a $4 billion budget and served 1.8 million members across 10 states.

Previously, Hayden was Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, managing a $7.8 billion budget and overseeing all Medicaid, long-term care, and human services programs. He also served as the state’s Medicaid Director. Prior to that, Hayden spent 9 years as President and Chief Administrative Officer of the Dean Health System, where he was the key architect for executing physician growth strategies that doubled system revenue.

Since January 2012, Hayden has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Medicaid Health Plans of America (MHPA). He was previously a board member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Hayden holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin.
