TARGET POPULATION

For this Network Survey, GLG surveyed 60 senior executives within the container shipping industry across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This is the fifth iteration in this tracker series.

What will you learn from this survey?

  • The survey captured a global overview of the industry, with regional perspectives.
  • Respondents discussed the operational challenges that are currently being faced within the industry and the impact of the ongoing global sanctions.
  • Furthermore, the research covered topics such as freight rates, oil prices and environmental concerns.

Examples of findings:

  • Close to nine-in-ten (87%) respondents reported that the demand for container shipping increased in 2024 compared to 2023.
  • Over half (53%) expect to see reduced Trans-Pacific shipping volumes between 2025-2029 due to Trump’s tariffs on Chinese exports.
  • Almost seven-in-ten (68%) experts stated that liner companies will pass the carbon levy to customers entirely.

Deliverables

The GLG Surveys team drafted the questionnaire with the support of GLG Network Member, Mark Williams, Managing Director at Shipping Strategy Ltd.

  • If you think that liner earnings are likely to fall due to fleet growth, in which year do you expect them to bottom out?
  • Donald Trump is promising tariffs on Chinese exports to the US. Do you expect this policy to reduce Trans-Pacific container shipping volumes?
  • Do you think that bottlenecks at the Panama Canal due to low rainfall have permanently changed liner company route planning?
