The healthcare industry represents one of the most promising applications for AI and machine learning. These technologies could transform how we deliver patient care, discover new therapeutics, control healthcare costs, and eliminate time-consuming administrative tasks.

GLG brought together leading subject-matter experts to discuss how AI and machine learning will drive the future of patient care and the broader healthcare industry.

Featured experts:

  • Prashanth Sarpamale, Former Chief Data Analytics Officer at Oak Street Health
  • Paul Martino, Founder of VillageMD
  • Douglas Kondziolka, MD, Vice-Chair of Neurosurgery at NYU Langone Medical Center

Key takeaways:

Integrating AI into Existing Workflows
Prashanth stressed the importance of ensuring that AI technologies are seamlessly integrated into existing healthcare systems. “AI should fit naturally into current workflows to truly add value,” he said.

Reproducibility in Medical AI
Douglas shared, “Reproducibility is key to ensuring AI works at scale in clinical settings,” and emphasized that machine learning models in healthcare must deliver consistent, reliable outcomes to build trust among patients and providers.

Understanding the Core Problem
For Paul, the success of AI in healthcare hinges on identifying the specific problems AI can solve and understanding who benefits from these solutions. “AI’s true value comes from solving real, tangible challenges,” he explained.

Looking Ahead: The Future of AI in Healthcare

The experts agreed that while AI adoption in healthcare is still in its early stages, the potential for long-term impact is significant. Prashanth suggested that investors should pay close attention to shifts in the healthcare ecosystem to identify companies that are well-positioned for future success.

Balancing Innovation and Regulation
The discussion turned to the balance between innovation and regulation in the healthcare sector. “We need common sense regulation that allows innovation without compromising security,” Prashanth stated. The experts were unified in their view that thoughtful regulation is essential to ensuring patient safety while allowing space for innovation.

AI’s Gradual Impact
The panel also explored the incremental progress of AI in healthcare, with both Prashanth and Douglas likening it to a “battle of inches.” Many improvements are happening behind the scenes and may be invisible to patients, but they are essential for improving operational efficiency. Paul suggested investors take a cautious approach, remembering that the healthcare system is already functioning well for many people. “Healthcare doesn’t need to change overnight,” he said. “Investors should remember that AI is an evolving tool, not a silver bullet.”
