Bringing Visibility to Global Artisans

Nest is a nonprofit committed the social and economic advancement of global artisans and homeworkers. By leveraging craft development as a tool for social change, Nest helps artisans achieve poverty alleviation, women’s empowerment, and cultural preservation. Nest works to bring viability and visibility to the global artisan community through hands-on tools, training, and infrastructure support. For her work, Nest Founder and Executive Director Rebecca van Bergen was selected as a 2015 GLG Social Impact Fellow. Van Bergen sits down with GLG to discuss the artisan economy, Nest’s mission, and how GLG is helping the organization learn from parallel industries.

Van Bergen founded Nest at the age of 24 after graduating with a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. In 2015, van Bergen was recognized by the Voss Water Foundation as one of their Women Helping Women. She was also named a PBS Changemaker and one of CNN’s Young People Who Rock. Nest received membership to the Clinton Global Initiative in 2015 and has been chosen by the White House as one of the Top 100 Entrepreneurial Enterprises led by a young person.
