Bringing Design Thinking to Affordable Medical Technology

D-Rev is a nonprofit medical device company designing and delivering affordable products to vulnerable populations in more than 50 countries. CEO Krista Donaldson explains how she and her team use systems thinking to design products. She also discusses the importance of designing products with impact in mind. “We’re an impact driven organization,” she says, “we want to be able to have our products assess themselves.” For her work, Donaldson was selected as a 2016 GLG Social Impact Fellow. She sits down with GLG to discuss D-Rev’s successful products targeting newborn health and amputees, how the organization determines which projects to undertake, and the lives D-Rev devices have changed.

Krista Donaldson is CEO of D-Rev. Before joining D-Rev, Donaldson was a Diplomacy Fellow in the U.S. Department of State’s American Association for the Advancement of Science and worked as a Design Engineer for KickStart International. She was named one of Fast Company Co.Design’s“50 Designers Shaping the Future” and a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum. Donaldson is a Rainer Arnhold Fellow and a Pop!Tech Social Innovation Fellow. She holds a BE from Vanderbilt University and a MSE (product design), MSME, and a PhD from Stanford University.
