You don’t need to Uber across town or hire web designers on Upwork to know the gig economy is exploding. More than 57 million people in the U.S. freelanced in 2017, which is about one-third of the workforce.
Within it is a less visible but growing class of knowledge workers – professionals with specialized knowledge who can command up to $1,000 an hour for sharing their expertise with companies. According to a new report from Civic, a policy research firm, the expert economy now includes 1.5 million people – about as many drivers as Uber and Lyft have in the U.S. combined.
