SURVEY DETAILS
TARGET POPULATION

For this Network Survey, GLG surveyed 50 senior executives working in the construction industry across Europe (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain). This is the third iteration in this tracker series.

What will you learn from this survey?

  • Respondents commented on the extent of inflation in the construction industry and where this is hitting hardest for the industry.
  • The research also looked into the main cost drivers over the past 3 years, uncovering how this has changed over time.
  • Lastly, the survey captured the respondents’ views on the space going forward and how costs may continue to change.

Examples of findings:

  • Prior to this year, availability of raw materials was seen as the main cost driver, however, in 2024, shortage of labour is seen as the key driver.
  • Nearly half of the experts (46%) believe that construction cost changes will negatively impact volumes for the rest of 2024.
  • Fifty percent believe it is likely that costs will decrease in the remainder of 2024, with one-quarter of those anticipating this decrease to be somewhere between 5% to 10%.

Deliverables

The GLG Surveys team drafted the questionnaire with the support of GLG Network Member, Michael Woertler, former CEO at Saint-Gobain Construction.

  • 1 x Individual responses (“raw data”) in Excel.
  • 1 x PPT report with aggregated data.
  • Executive summary with key takeaways and highlights from the raw data.

  • In each of these years, how did the overall cost for construction materials change in comparison to the previous year?
  • How would you describe construction volume changes in the first quarter of 2024 compared to same time last year?
  • What impact do you expect construction cost changes to have on the construction volume for the rest of 2024?
  • To what extent do you agree with the following statement: “Cost inflation and possible margin changes will result in more M&A activity and opportunities in the next 12 months.”?
  • In your view, what will be the main cost driver for the remainder of 2024?
