TARGET POPULATION

For this Network Survey, GLG surveyed 60 senior executives within the container shipping industry across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This is the sixth iteration in this tracker series.

 

What will you learn from this survey?

  • The survey captured a global overview of the industry, with regional perspectives.
  • Respondents discussed the operational challenges that are currently being faced within industry and the impact of the ongoing global sanctions.
  • Furthermore, the research covered topics such as freight rates, oil prices and environmental concerns.

 

Examples of findings:

  • Close to six-in-ten (57%) respondents declared that Maersk is expected to be disrupted by ongoing global sanctions.
  • Over two-thirds (67%) experts stated that average global freight rates for container shipping will increase by more than 10% in 2025.
  • 43% of experts agree that global decarbonization policies will disrupt global container trade over time.

 

Deliverables

The GLG Surveys team drafted the questionnaire with the support of GLG Network Member, Mark Williams, Managing Director at Shipping Strategy Ltd.

Sample Questions

  • One-year time charter rates for container ships remain at multi-year highs. For the following vessel sizes, please indicate what you think will happen to one-year time charter rates in 2025.
  • In light of ongoing global sanctions and conflicts, which of the following do you believe could see their schedule or services disrupted?
  • Fuel cells and batteries are being fitted to short-sea and coastal vessels already. Do you think that container ship owners will order feeder containerships with this technology as their main means of propulsion?
  • Do you think liner companies will retrofit existing ships to LNG as a marine fuel?
  • Do you support the introduction of an IMO emissions levy to pay for research into low-carbon alternative fuels?
  • Do you expect Asia-Europe rail to increase competition for Asia-Europe container shipping?
  • If you think that liner earnings are likely to fall due to fleet growth, in which year do you expect them to bottom out?
