New York, New York; June 12, 2017<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0GLG<\/a>\u00a0(Gerson Lehrman Group, Inc.), today released a new\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0with Academy Award\u00ae winning screenwriter and filmmaker Dustin Lance Black, as part of its\u00a0Anatomy of a Decision<\/i><\/a>\u00a0video series. Black explains how he approaches the writing process and how to make a project commercially viable in Hollywood, saying, \u201cIf you want to tell a story that draws emotion in a universal way, the way you do that isn\u2019t by making it general, you make it really, really specific.\u201d Black adds, \u201cTell a good story that changes people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black won the Academy Award\u00ae for best original screenplay for his work on the motion picture\u00a0Milk<\/i>, and more recently created the eight hour ABC TV mini-series\u00a0When We Rise<\/i>, which chronicled key moments in the LGBT rights movement. Interviewed by GLG Head of Public Affairs Richard Socarides, Black discusses how to turn a passion project into something with commercial appeal, saying, \u201cSpecificity is what makes the unusual universal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of\u00a0When We Rise<\/i><\/a>, Black says, \u201cThe idea of the film is that we are strongest when we march arm in arm with other people of diversity.\u201d Black also shares what drives him to be a storyteller, \u201cIf we\u2019re moving the needle each day with the story we\u2019re telling, I\u2019ve got a reason to get out of bed. And there are so many necessary stories; I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve slept in in 15 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black, best known for his work on\u00a0Milk<\/i>, and this year\u2019s\u00a0When We Rise<\/i>, began his career directing documentaries and commercials. Then, he was a writer and co-producer on HBO\u2019s Emmy\u00ae and Golden Globe\u00ae nominated\u00a0Big Love<\/i>, and later earned a \u201c10 Best of the Year\u201d award from the American Film Institute for his screenplay for\u00a0J. Edgar. Black<\/i>\u00a0has served on the board of the Trevor Project, which works to prevent teen suicides, and is also a founding board member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER).<\/p>\n
