When my company, a global 1,000-person professional learning platform called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/company\/glg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-event-category=\"recirculation\" data-event-label=\"Clicked: company\" data-event-action=\"Autolink\">GLG<\/a>, was in the middle of our pivot, we felt our new office could help define our future, but we had two unexciting options.<\/p>\n<p>One option was traditional private offices and cubicles, which are unimaginative and restrictive. The other was an open office plan\u2014the shiny new toy in office design 15 years ago\u2014but a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3019758\/dialed\/offices-for-all-why-open-office-layouts-are-bad-for-employees-bosses-and-productivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">growing body of evidence suggests it decreases productivity and weakens job performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead we designed our new corporate headquarters across the street from Grand Central Terminal\u201465,000 square feet over two floors for nearly 300 New York employees\u2014around a new paradigm, neither open nor full of private offices.<\/p>\n<p>Our architect, Clive Wilkinson, introduced us to an idea called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3010553\/how-well-work-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">activity-based working (ABW)<\/a>.
